Volvo Sends the First Plug-In Diesel Hybrid to Production

McLaughlin Volvo is pretty sure you've heard about clean-diesel engines. And we know you've heard about hybrid powertrains, and even plug-in hybrids. Well, how about a diesel plug-in hybrid? No? Well, thanks to Volvo, now you have. Introducing the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid: the world's first ever diesel-powered, hybrid power plant that can run on electric power alone.

And just like every other car in the lineup, this is nothing short of a fantastic feat of engineering. The 5-cylinder, 2.4-liter diesel engine pumps out 215 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque, and the electric motor provides another 70 horsepower and 147 lb.-ft. of torque, for a total power output of 285 horsepower and 362 lb.-ft. of torque. And, a single charge will allow the V60 to travel 32 miles on electric power alone.

Oh, it gets better. With three different driving modes, (Pure, Power, and Hybrid), drivers can choose just the kind of green driving experience they want to have. Obviously there's the Pure electric mode, the torque-driven Power mode, and right in between the two is the Hybrid mode, offering top-notch performance with less tailpipe emissions.

A unique power train deserve a unique look, don't you think? Volvo certainly does, which is why they're only offering it in one - aptly named - color, Electric Silver. The interior is full of entertainment features (including a multimedia DVD audio system), polished with an array of Scandinavian inspired accents. It's one-of-a-kind from its grille to its taillights.

Volvo President & CEO, Stefan Jacoby, says, "Our plug-in hybrid has received considerable attention since it was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011. Now we're taking the next step by presenting the production model, which is graced with a distinctive profile featuring a spectacular silver color, and exclusive interior and generous standard equipment."1

As for the rollout, Volvo plans to release 1,000 units in select European markets for the 2013 model year. By the 2014 model year, they're planning to send out as many as 6,000 units. No word yet on if it  will make it to the United States, but we certainly hope so, as we know a lot of drivers here in Moline that would love to get their hands on this powerful and efficient Volvo.

While it will most definitely be worth the wait, we invite you to explore the fuel-efficient new Volvo lineup online, anytime. Or, stop in and take one for a spin at McLaughlin Volvo, 4101 41st St Moline, IL 61265. We're always happy to help you find the right Volvo for your lifestyle.
