By the end of next year, drivers in the Moline, IL area will be able to come into McLaughlin Volvo to check out the latest in electric vehicle technology. Volvo has recently announced that in the next few months, testing will begin on an entirely electric Volvo C30.
But, that's only the beginning. Volvo has partnered with Europe's largest engineering company, Siemens AG, to develop an entire line of electric vehicles.
And Volvo plans to move swiftly. Stefan Jacoby, Chief Executive Officer, Volvo, has said of the effort, "Our aim is to be first with the latest technology within electrification. The partnership reinforces our aim to pursue the fast-growing market for electric cars."1
Following track test studies, Siemens and Volvo will develop electric motors and charging systems for as many as 200 electric cars. After track tests, the vehicles will be tested under real-life conditions by the end of 2012.
Siemens, based in Munich, hopes to achieve an industry wide standard for electric vehicles. Seigfried Russworm, head of Siemens Industry Sector, says, "Cooperation with Volvo is an important milestone in the development of top-quality components and systems for electric cars subsequently intended for series production."sup>2
Volvo EVs might not be here yet, but McLaughlin Volvo invites you to stop by 4101 41st Street, Moline, IL and take a spin in one of the many new Volvo models in our showroom. We look forward to talking to you!
