Volvo to End Production in Uddevalla, Sweden

When the Volvo Car Corporation takes soles ownership of Pininfarina Sveige AB in Sweden, their joint venture manufacturing facility in Uddevalla will meet its end. The Swedish plant currently manufactures the Volvo C70 hardtop convertible, but according to officials at the company, employees and manufacturing will be better suited at plants with a higher production volume.

Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO at Volvo, says "The low volumes in the Uddevalla plant do not justify continued production," explains Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO, Volvo. "We will now look into when a next-generation Volvo convertible can be on the market and where it should be manufactured."1 Jacoby went on to explain that keeping a plant open that only produces one model doesn't make much logistic sense in the long run, especially when it's only utilizing 65-percent of its production capacity.

The fate of the C70 hardtop convertible remains unclear, but closure of the plant is still two years away. Among their plans, Jacoby says, is a next generation convertible. Also shifting around in the move will be the 600 employees in Uddevalla. Jacoby explained, "The employees in Uddevalla are very skilled car builders. Therefore, we hope that as many as possible will choose to [stay with] the Volvo Car Corporation."2 He went on to say that they will be offered positions in Gothenburg or in any of the other Volvo Car Corporations facilities in Sweden.
